WILMINGTON — Stars from the musical worlds of country, rhythm and blues, and doo-woop are coming to Port City’s downtown.
The Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts announced its 2017-2018 season today.
Highlights include:
October 20 – Hal Holbrook in “Mark Twain Tonight!” Holbrook – an Academy Award-nominee and Emmy and Tony Award winner – stars as the deceptively plain-spoken writer.
November 4 – Sisters Scherrie and Freda Payne will perform classic soul and R&B hits. The Payne sisters joined The Supremes in 1973 after Diana Ross left the group, and helped keep the group alive through the 1970s.
April 5 (2018) – Rosanne Cash, eldest daughter of country legend Johnny Cash, and country star in her own right, will perform. Cash will be joined husband and writing partner John Leventhal.
April 26 (2018) – The latest incarnation of the influential 1953 doo-wop group, The Drifters, will perform songs like “Up on the Roof” and “Under the Boardwalk.”
Thalian Hall will also host a production of Neil Simon’s “The Sunshine Boys” from Aug. 24 through Sept. 11. According to Mary Jane McKittrick, spokeswoman for Thalian Hall, the play will feature “inventive staging that will literally move the audience.”
Following that, Thalian Hall will produce “Give ’em Hell, Harry!” from Oct. 12-22. According to McKittrick, President Harry Truman will be portrayed by his grandson, Clifton Truman Daniels, the first time in theater history.
Tickets for the 2017-2018 season go on sale this Saturday, July 29. Tickets are available in person at Thalian Hall 310 Chestnut St., from 2 – 6 p.m. and online here.
