WILMINGTON –Drivers who take Interstate 40 over the Northeast Cape Fear River — near mile marker 414 — should expect delays over the next few days.
Lanes will be closed in each direction for repairs to the eastbound bridge on Monday and Tuesday, May 22 and 23.
“The closures are needed so Department of Transportation staff can repair the concrete deck of the eastbound bridge over the Northeast Cape Fear River,” a release from the DOT states.
Lane closures will be in place from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day. One lane will remain open for traffic in each direction.
“Safety is our top priority,” Bridge Maintenance Engineer Adam Britt said. “We live in a region with cold winters and hot summers. It takes a toll on our bridges, which is why we examine every component and make repairs as needed.”
There will not be a detour; travelers should expect delays. Transportation officials also asked drivers to use caution through the work zone.
Crews will conduct further inspections of the bridge while the lanes are closed. The Federal Highway Administration requires bridges to be inspected every two years.
