SHALLOTTE — All families who have experienced the death of someone special are invited to a no cost Family Day on Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 623 Village Road in Shallotte.
Led by Lower Cape Fear Hospice (LCFH) counselors and trained volunteers, this transformational day combines fun activities with grief education and emotional support. Family Day allows families to meet friends facing similar circumstances; honor and memorialize loved ones; have fun, parachute playing, horseback riding and pizza eating; process grief in healthy ways; and enhance self-esteem.
“The day has a fluidness to it,” said Marty Hernandez, LCFH Children’s Bereavement Counselor Coordinator. “There are various activities all going on at once. Parents may be taking in a short educational presentation while kids are crafting or playing a game. At other times, parents and children may be doing an activity together. The goal is that the whole family leaves with ways to work together to heal their grief.”
Children of all ages are encouraged to attend, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Family Day provides a unique opportunity to increase levels of hope and especially to learn that you and your family are not alone.
The nonprofit hospice also offers five-day summer grief camps for children at its Wilmington campus at 1414 Physicians Drive in Wilmington, NC. Space is limited, to register call 910-796-7991 or 910-796-8056. For more information and to get an application call 800-733-1476.
