One swimmer rescued, one still missing in Kure Beach after jumping off the pier

KURE BEACH — Local and federal authorities are searching for a missing swimmer after two people jumped off the Kure Beach Pier.

According to Kure Beach Fire Department Lt. Steven Zwally, emergency personnel responded to a water rescue call at the the pier, located in the 100 block of K Avenue, at about 1:43 p.m. Monday. While in route, fire crews were informed that there were not one, but two people in the water.

Kure Beach Police Chief Michael Bowden said one person disappeared from view. The other person was rescued from the water and pulled to shore.

Firefighters J.D. Lanier and Taylor Jones were involved in the rescue at the pier, Kure Beach Assistant Chief Ed Kennedy said. Fire crews also kept the male from going into shock, checked vital signs and kept the person warm until EMS arrived on scene.

The male was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. His current condition is unknown.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, crews were still searching for the second individual. The U.S. Coast Guard joined the search Monday afternoon, with three boats and a helicopter, Kennedy said.

“We are actively looking for a second individual,” Zwally said.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Kure Beach Police Department.
