The number one movie is “Funny Face” starring Audrey Hepburn.

The number one song is “Butterfly” by Charlie Gracie.

The Dream Academy singer/guitarist Nick Laird-Clowes was born and politician Redfield Proctor Jr. died.

Laika, a Russian dog, becomes the first living creature to be sent into space, in Sputnik 2. Sadly, she did not make it back alive.
