NEW HANOVER COUNTY — New Hanover County is giving residents an easy way to dispose of household hazardous waste, and it starts next Monday.
The county has created a new, mobile collection unit known as the “Hazwagon.” Starting Monday, Jan. 16, the Hazwagon will travel to three locations in the county each week to allow residents to dispose of hazardous waste and electronics for free.
Mondays, the Hazwagon will be at the Ogden Park ball fields, 7069 Market St., Wilmington, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Wednesdays it will be at Wrightsville Beach Municipal Complex, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
On Fridays, the wagon will head to Carolina Beach. In the immediate future, the wagon will be parked at the Mike Chappell Park, in the south side of the park across from the tennis courts), from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This is a temporary location; the final location in Carolina Beach is to be determined.
In addition to the HazWagon, residents can bring household hazardous waste to the permanent facility located at 3002 US Highway 421 North, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. – noon.
Items that will be accepted are: Acids, cooking oil, Mercury-containing devices, aerosol cans, electronics (TVs, computers, etc.), motor oil/filters, antifreeze, fertilizers, paint (latex and oil-based), ballasts, flammable liquids, pesticides, batteries (all types), fuels, sharps (needles), caustics, fungicides, stains and varnishes, CFL light bulbs & tubes, herbicides, solvents, and household cleaners.
There is a limit of two television sets and 10 gallons of liquid waste per week, per residential address. There is no limit on all other waste types.
Also, liquid waste should be brought to the HazWagon in non-returnable disposable containers. Anyone wishing to dispose of liquid (such as motor oil) and keep their container will need to take the liquid to the permanent facility located at 3002 US Highway 421 North.
