LELAND — The audio from the police involved shooting in Leland last Friday, Dec. 9 has been released, though an investigation into the shooting in which Police Officer Jacob Schwenk was shot multiple times in the legs and a suspect was killed, is ongoing.
Schwenk was responding to Bridgeport Way in the Windsor Park neighborhood at about 8:50 p.m. Friday, where he encountered a suspect by the name of Brent Quinn, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The 911 tapes reveal callers believed Quinn to be drunk and reported he was driving erratically, potentially a danger to the residents of the neighborhood.

The first clip is just over three minutes long. It is from Brunswick County Dispatch and includes three 911 calls made about incident, from the initial call to the report of shooting. The clips have been edited by police to redact names and addresses, and by Port City Daily to remove the silences caused by those edits.
The second clip over six minutes long. It is the radio traffic among law enforcement that begins at the point Officer Schwenk reports that he has been shot and that the suspect as been hit, as well. The clip highlights the response among different agencies at the scene.
Officer Schwenk is recovering from his injuries and subsequent surgery. He has asked for privacy through the town. The town announced on Monday it will continue to pay the officer’s salary while he recovers.
