Pender County under a water conservation advisory

PENDER COUNTY – Pender County Utilities customers in the entire county are required to take steps to decrease water usage.

The water conservation advisory released by Pender County Government officials on Friday is effective immediately. The conservation effort comes following damage to a raw water line that provides the raw water to the Pender County Surface Water Treatment Plant.

Pender County joins the list of other counties in the Cape Fear region under similar water restrictions.

“The raw water main owned by the Lower Cape Fear Water and Sewer Authority that carries raw water from the Kings Bluff Raw Water Pump Station to the Pender County Water Treatment Plant and others broke Thursday, resulting in temporarily raw water supply shut downs in order to determine the cause of the pipe failure and complete the necessary repair(s),” a notice from Pender County read.

While the repairs are underway, the raw water supply may need to be shut down to allow crews to perform repairs, which may take several days.

“Pender County Utilities has access to another source of safe, drinking water in the event this primary source is offline.”

The advisory is not a system pressure or boil water advisory, but a conservation advisory.

Outdoor irrigation and car washing are banned. This includes watering lawns, grass, shrubbery, trees and flowers. Customers are also encouraged to take additional measures to reduce water consumption, such as taking showers instead of baths and only running full loads in dishwashers or washing machines.

Customers will be notified when repairs are complete and restrictions are no longer required. Customers may call contact 910-259- 1570 for additional information.
