PENDER COUNTY — Pender County Schools has announced that schools will remain closed on Thursday, Oct. 13, to all students and non-emergency staff.
According to the school system, the closure is due to “increased flooding and flooding during this state of emergency.”
All schools in Pender County have been shut down since Monday as cleanup and other issues pertaining to the effects of Hurricane Matthew continue.
Flooding is still a major concern, and on Tuesday a mandatory evacuation was issued for residents in the Black River Basin due to rising water. Evacuees are being directed to shelters located at two different Pender County schools in Burgaw: Malpass Elementary School, located at 4992 Malpass Corner Road, and Burgaw Middle School (which is pet-friendly), located at 500 S. Wright St.
