OAK ISLAND — A small raft made of plastic bottles and bags – some with the words “Cuba” on them – washed ashore on the west end of Oak Island during Hurricane Matthew.
Though its origins are unconfirmed, many island residents who gathered around the raft Sunday speculated it came from much further south and was pushed northward by the storm.
Oak Island resident Charlton Fitch said he was out riding his bike Sunday and checking the damage from Hurricane Matthew when he came upon the raft, which was made of basic items and tied together with a chain link fence.
“It looks like it’s a lot of corn sacks that they filled with bottles. The ingenuity on this thing is just quite remarkable,” Fitch said. “My first thought is, who was riding it? Did they get to safety? My prayers and things just go out to all the people that were on it, if anybody was on it, that they got to safety.”
A message left with the Oak Island Police Department was not immediately returned.
