CAROLINA BEACH — A 21-year-old man charged with a shooting Monday afternoon in Carolina Beach, has been booked in jail under a $25 million bond.

Thomas Henry Coulson is facing three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, according to New Hanover County jail records. Monday night, authorities with the Carolina Beach Police Department identified Coulson as the suspect arrested in connection with a shooting in the 1600 block of Sea Ray Lane.

Officers with the Carolina and Kure beach police departments responded to reports of gunfire on Sea Ray Lane at about 3 p.m. Monday. Carolina Beach Police Chief Chris Spivey said a man armed with a “military or assault style” weapon opened fire at officers on scene.

The gunfire struck one of the Carolina Beach police officer’s duty equipment and uniform, but no officers or civilians were injured. Officers at the scene took cover and were extracted from the area by the county’s emergency response team. Vehicle traffic, as well as school buses that were transporting children at the time of the incident, were rerouted while the scene was still active.

The suspect, who police later identified as Coulson, fled from a residence on Sea Ray Lane and was later apprehended a short distance from the area. A firearm was also recovered by police.

Coulson is scheduled to make his first appearance in New Hanover County District Court to face charges in the incident Tuesday afternoon.
