WILMINGTON – Pending good weather conditions, crews from the city of Wilmington will begin the 2016 Sidewalk Rehabilitation Capital Project this week in residential portions of downtown.
During the four-month-long project, cement sidewalks will be replaced or repaired, and handicap accessible ramps will be placed in several areas. Workers will start in the 400 block of Dock Street and move their way east to the 900 block of Dock Street over the next two weeks.
Other streets that will have their sidewalks worked on include: Red Cross Street between 4th and McRae streets; Manly Avenue between Johnson Street and Princess Place Drive; 6th Street between Queen and Wright streets; and 4th Street between Dawson and Willard streets.
Residents in these areas will receive notices from the city informing them of work dates on their street, possible effects to private property and how they can help crews expedite the process.
About 2,300 square yards of sidewalks will be repaired or replaced during construction, which is expected to be completed this winter. The project will cost $332,000 from the city’s regular maintenance budget and does not involve any money approved in the transportation bond.
According to the city, it is part of an overall goal to make sure sidewalks are safe and compliant with the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Several sections of sidewalks are worked on each year.
