WILMINGTON – A Wilmington woman will serve more than a year in prison after pleading guilty to a May crash that killed 36-year-old Lacoltus Antwan Grady.
Brittany Nicole Boddiford, 22, pleaded guilty Tuesday in New Hanover County Superior Court to several charges in the case, including involuntary manslaughter, according to Samantha Dooies, assistant to District Attorney Ben David.
On May 5 at about 6 p.m., Boddiford was returning to the Domino’s Pizza off Carolina Beach Road after making a delivery when she struck Grady in 600 block of Monringside Drive in Wilmington.
Boddiford was reportedly reaching for her cellphone when she drifted in her Mercury Mountaineer into the oncoming lane of traffic. She struck Grady as he stood near the driver’s side door of his parked vehicle and then hit another vehicle head-on.
According to an arrest warrant, she was driving in excess of the 25 m.p.h. speed limit on Morningside Drive.
Grady was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Boddiford was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Boddiford pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter, misdemeanor possession of marijuana and failure to reduce speed. Superior Court Judge Reuben Young sentenced Boddiford to 13-25 months in the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
Assistant District Attorney Doug Carriker prosecuted the case for the state. Assistant Public Defender Jason Minnicozzi represented Boddiford in the case.
