New stormwater fees to take effect in Wilmington

WILMINGTON – The new stormwater fee for residents in the city of Wilmington will go into effect Thursday.

The change from the former flat rate of $7.23 to $7.66 a month is an increase of 43 cents, or six percent, for a typical residential household. Since bills are issued bi-monthly, that translates to an increase from a base rate of $14.46 to $15.32.

The city’s billing system is administered by the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA).

According to the CFPUA, the funds will go back into the city of Wilmington’s Stormwater Utility Fund, and the increase will help pay for stormwater management projects currently underway in the city.

“The stormwater fee is being increased so Wilmington can keep up with expanded maintenance services as it funds large drainage improvement projects in problem areas,” a press release states. “Among the major projects to be funded are two, multi-million dollar efforts, one near the intersection of Brookshire Lane and Beasley Road and another near Clear Run Drive.  Both projects will replace deteriorated, undersized infrastructure to improve drainage, stream restoration, and erosion control.”

The flat rate is based on the amount of impervious or hard surface on a property. Commercial and large residential properties pay the basic $7.66 rate for every 2,500 square feet of impervious surface on their lots.
