A Wilmington woman faces a new charge in a crash that killed a 36-year-old man earlier this month while she was returning from a pizza delivery.
Brittany Nicole Boddiford, 22, was charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter in the May 5 wreck that killed Lacoltus Antwan Grady, according to arrest warrants. Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Linda Rawley said the wreck happened in the 600 block of Morningside Drive at about 6 p.m., when Boddiford was headed back to a Domino’s pizza restaurant on Carolina Beach Road after she made a delivery.
Boddiford was reportedly reaching for her cell phone when she drifted left into the oncoming lane of traffic and stuck Grady with her Mercury Mountaineer as he stood near the driver side door of his parked vehicle, Rawley said. Boddiford then sideswiped Grady’s vehicle and hit a moving truck that was parked nearby head-on.
Grady was thrown over the hood of the moving truck and then hit the ground, Rawley said. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Boddiford was also taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Boddiford was originally charged following the wreck with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving left of center, speeding and simple possession of marijuana. She was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $1,000 secured bond and released the next day.
According to an arrest warrant, she was driving in excess of the 25 mph speed limit on Morningside Drive.
Boddiford was arrested again Friday on charge of involuntary manslaughter while in court on the original charges, according to a clerk of court. Her bond was raised to $150,000 secured.
