Three men and a woman have been charged with first-degree murder after the death of a 55-year-old man injured during a March assault at his home.
David Leroy Clark Jr., of Wilmington, died on April 8 as a result of severe head injuries he sustained during a March 20 assault, according to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Cathryn Lindsay.
The incident happened at Clark’s home in the 500 block of Alabama Avenue in Wilmington. Lindsay said the suspects went into the home, assaulted and robbed Clark. Police responded to investigate and Clark was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Following Clark’s death on April 8, a subsequent autopsy indicated his injuries from the assault caused his death, Lindsay said.
Mark Steven Landreth, 30, of Wilmington and William Matthew Fought, 23, of Leland, were each charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit common law robbery, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and attempted breaking and entering.
Donna Lynne Beck, 46, of Wilmington, and Joshua Jeremy Chavis, 24, of Lumberton, were each charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit common law robbery and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
“Detectives believe Landreth and Fought attempted to break into Clark’s home by kicking his doors prior to the assault,” Lindsay said. “They were unsuccessful, and returned later with Beck and Chavis and committed the assault and robbery on the victim.”
The four murder suspects are being held at the New Hanover County Jail without bond.
