A Wilmington man was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for a February 2015 shooting at a Market Street hotel that paralyzed a man.
Sharod Jamar Bryant, 25, pleaded guilty Thursday in New Hanover County Superior Court to attempted first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, second-degree kidnapping, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to District Attorney Ben David.
Bryant was charged in connection with a shooting and robbery at the Red Roof Inn located at 5107 Market St., in the early morning hours of February 23, 2015.
Bryant reportedly went to a woman’s room, pointed a handgun at her chest and stole her wallet and cellphone. A man, who was staying with the woman at the hotel, ran to the room after hearing her screams in an attempt to help her. When the man came to the room, Bryant shot the victim in the torso, David said, causing an injury that paralyzed the man from the waist down.
Bryant ran from the area but was quickly captured by Wilmington police, just a few blocks away from the scene of the shooting.
“Thanks to the hard work of Detective Andrew Swenson and the responding officers with the Wilmington Police Department, Bryant was apprehended within minutes of the shooting and arrested,” David said.
Superior Court Judge Ebern T. Watson sentenced Bryant to 200-252 months in the N.C. Department of Corrections. Assistant District Attorney Barrett Temple prosecuted the case for the state. Attorney Merritt Wagoner represented Bryant.
