As the Azalea Festival continues its annual celebration of spring, meteorologists are focusing winter-like conditions for the weekend.
Forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a freeze warning across the tri-county for Saturday night, when the chilly air rolls in.
NOAA predicts temperatures will drop to below 32 degrees along the coast, with even more frigid conditions further inland. While the abnormal weather will linger into Sunday morning, NOAA expects warmer temperatures by the start of next week.
In addition to the freeze warning, meteorologists have cautioned residents in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties of an increased fire risk throughout the region. A “red flag” warning will also be in place for the entire southeastern region of the state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
The combination of low relative humidity and sustained winds of more than 20 miles per hour elevates the chance of sparking blazes, according to NOAA. The organization cautions residents against outdoor burning Saturday.
