Fire destroys sports equipment shed at Hoggard; ruled intentional

A fire to a shed in the sports complex at John T. Hoggard High School has been ruled as intentionally set.

Fire crews responded to the high school located at 4305 Shipyard Blvd. at about 4:46 a.m. Saturday, arriving on the scene within minutes of the call, according to Wilmington Fire Department Battalion Chief David Hines. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire.

The storage shed and sports equipment inside were completely destroyed, Hines said. The fire also caused heat damage to another nearby shed. The bleachers and sports complex were not damaged and no injuries were reported.

“We are unsure of [the sports equipment’s] value and what if any can be salvaged from the exposure shed,” Hines said.

The loss of the shed alone is estimated at about $10,000, Hines said. The investigation into the intentionally set fire is ongoing. Wilmington Fire Marshals are investigating with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, who has jurisdiction over the county school property, Hines said
