As a vast wooded lot in midtown Wilmington is cleared to make way for a new multiplex and mixed-use development, another commercial center is cropping up in the Ogden area.
Work continues on The Pointe at Barclay, the first phase of a 20- to 30-year plan to develop approximately 300 acres across from Cameron Art Museum at the intersection of Independence Boulevard and S. 17th Street.
It’s a plan – spearheaded by Cameron Properties Land Company of Wilmington and Charlotte real estate firm Collett – that was put into action last fall. When complete, it will contain a 14-screen movie theater from Stone Theatres, which announced last May that it was responding to the demand for a theater in that part of town.
The Pointe will also include a “mix of premium restaurants and services, along with a grocery store and ancillary retail,” according to Collett’s website.
It’s all set to open later this year or early 2017, followed by decades of residential build-out around the anchor shopping center.
Meanwhile, along Market Street near Porters Neck, construction is underway on the Ogden Marketplace. Bell Moore Group, the third-party management firm for the project, recently released artist renderings of the commercial center.
Anchored by a Publix grocery store, Ogden Marketplace will include an additional 10 to 15 shops and eateries, as well as a street-front auto care center corner of Market Street and Middle Sound Loop.
Last August, Wilmington City Council agreed to rezone the 13-acre site to allow construction on Ogden Marketplace to begin, two months after voting to voluntarily annex the property.
