The “Redheaded Stranger” himself is rolling into the Port City this summer.
Iconic country crooner Willie Nelson and Family will grace the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater stage in May as part of a wave of upcoming shows from Huka Entertainment. The 2016 season, announced Tuesday, continues a long tradition of 98.3 FM The Penguin bringing concerts to the area.
The season kicks off with two nights of live tunes from reggae powerhouse Iration. The Hawaii-born, West Coast-bred roots music will take over the amphitheater Thursday, April 14 and Friday, April 15. Tickets are $25-$30.
Then on Saturday, May 7, North Carolina’s own eclectic and infectious six-piece band, Big Something, returns to the outdoor venue, with ticket prices running between $15 and $20. The electro-funk, dance party-primed, rock fusion show is followed by a double headliner from indie folk and Americana outfits Trampled By Turtles and The Devil Makes Three on Wednesday, May 18. Tickets are $30-$40.

The incomparable Nelson – braids, bandanas and all – brings his signature voice and stellar onstage presence to Greenfield Lake on Tuesday, May 24. Armed with his trusty guitar, Trigger, and backed by the close-knit Family Band, he’ll pick from among his decades of hits. Tickets are $78 for general admission ($99 for special pit seating).
The season continues with surfing songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter on Saturday, Aug. 20. The quick-witted, mustachioed friend of Jack Johnson exploded on the scene in 2002 with his self-titled first solo album. The prolific performer maintains a back-porch intimacy with crowds large and small.
Tickets to hear Frankenreiter’s honey-thick vocals ($22-$25), and to all other shows in the season, go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, and can be purchased through Port City Daily’s “Concerts” tab.
According to a Huka spokesman, more shows are in the works and will be announced soon. Check Port City Daily for the latest concert news.
