A Laney High School student was arrested on drug and firearm charges while on the campus Thursday.

Three students were caught smoking marijuana in the school parking lot at about noon Thursday, according to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer. When deputies investigated, they found a fourth student – 17-year-old John Leslie King – who was also found with marijuana.

Deputies searched King’s vehicle and found a knife, hatchet and a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, Brewer said. Pills and marijuana were also seized from his vehicle. King was arrested by a school resource officer, while the other three students were placed in the diversionary program to receive discipline by the school.

King has been charged with possession of a weapon on schools campus, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance,  carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, four counts of possession of a schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was booked at the New Hanover County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond.
