Healthy, affordable and sustainable eats are on the menu during the 2015 Food Day Wilmington.
Sponsored by Feast Down East and community partners, this year’s free event gets underway Friday, with events scheduled throughout the day on the campus of UNC-Wilmington.
Feast Down East is a local nonprofit working to build a strong food system in both urban and rural areas. Among other initiatives, the organization helps small-scale, limited-resource farmers connect with local markets.
Food Day–a nationwide celebration of and movement toward more healthy, affordable, and sustainable food–is held across the country each year on Oct. 23.
Locally, the event will get underway at 9 a.m. with a workshop titled “You Are What You Eat,” followed by workshops on intuitive and clean eating, as well as regenerative farming. All sessions are held in UNCW Fisher Student Center’s Masonboro Room.
At 11:30 a.m., Jonathan Barfield, chairman of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners, and Wilmington mayor pro tem Margaret Haynes officially proclaim Oct. 23 as Food Day for Wilmington.
A sustainable food fair and drive from noon to 2 p.m. at the UNCW Amphitheater features cooking and gardening demonstrations, an outdoor Iron Chef competition, a kale-eating contest, a photo booth and more.
Chefs from UNCW Campus Dining will provide a locally sourced lunch available for purchase at Dubs Café, located in the Warwick Center. The lunch is all you can eat for $7 per person. The Green Spot in the Hawk’s Nest will also serve up local eats. Prices vary by meal choice.
As part of the celebration, a collection drive will be held to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Those attending Food Day are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to donate.

Music
Flytrap Brewing presents a free live show from local singer/songwriter Susan Savia at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday). T’GEAUX BOYS food truck will serve up New Orleans-style street food from 7 to 9. On Friday, Folkstone Stringband plays bluegrass beginning at 8 p.m. and Pepe’s Taco Truck will be onsite with Mexican fare from 7 to 11. Jesse Jewell and Richard Welch perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, with A & M’s Red Food Truck serving up sliders and tacos from 7 to 10.
The Juggling Gypsy hosts “Fire and Drums” at 8 p.m. each Thursday night. The event is a meet-up of fire dancers and area drummers, with deejays spinning tunes beginning at 10 p.m. Participants are welcome to bring their percussion instruments and fire and juggling toys. A Tarot card reader will be on hand between 6 and 10 p.m. Admission is free.
98.3 The Penguin and Huka Entertainment present genre-bending band ALO in concert Friday at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. New Orleans-based melodic punk pop outfit Yojimbo opens the show. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the show starts at 6. Tickets are $22-$27.
The Boogie in the Park free concert series continues at 7 p.m. Friday with the funk, rock, pop and soul of Sonic Spectrum at Ocean Front Park in Kure Beach. This concert is rescheduled from the Oct. 4 event that was canceled due to inclement weather.
Soulful acoustic duo Our Good Intentions plays a free show at 8 p.m. Friday at The Pub at Sweet n’ Savory. Local band Overtyme performs at 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
Left-handed dyslexic and proud college dropout Matt Phillips brings his quirky style of 90s neo-soul inspired songwriting to Bombers Bev Co. Friday. The show starts at 9 p.m. and admission is free.
Theater/Comedy
Browncoat Pub and Theatre presents a post-apocalyptic spin on Shakespeare’s tragedy, “Titus Andronicus,” at 8 p.m. tonight through Saturday and at 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 Thursday and Sunday and $20 Friday and Saturday ($10 for students).
The critically acclaimed Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre comes to Thalian Hall Friday. The performance gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18-$32.
“a zombie, a vampire, and a werewolf walk into a bar…” continues at TheatreNOW dinner theater at 7 p.m. Friday. A second performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. The play, which tells the story of three ladies of the night venturing out for a night on the town, is for mature audiences only. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $34 for dinner and the show ($20 show only).
Comedian Forrest Shaw brings his stand-up to Dead Crow Comedy Room this weekend. Shaw made his debut on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” in 2014. He will perform at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $15-$19.
Art
Fourth Friday Gallery Night gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday at various downtown galleries. The monthly event allows galleries, studios and art spaces to open their doors to the public in an after-hours celebration of art and culture.
Tidal Creek Co-op hosts the free Artists and Ales Fall Festival from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday on its community deck. Artists will be on hand with their creations and a beverage tent will serve up brews. There will also be food from the Co-op Cafe, live music and a Wine and Design painting workshop, as well as a workshop on flower crown-making.
Wabi Sabi Warehouse holds The Mermaids at 6 p.m. Saturday. The art event will feature live music, food, drinks and mermaids onsite. Artists will be on hand showing their paintings, mixed media art, handmade art and essential oil blends. Admission is free.
Film
Detour Deli and Café hosts Film Noir Thursdays from 8 to 10 p.m. each week. Tonight’s film is “Laura,” starring Vincent Price. Admission is free.
