The Vikings’ reign atop the Mideastern Conference continued on Wednesday night as Hoggard swept Topsail 3-0 to grab the inaugural tournament championship. After capturing the regular season title with a 12-0 mark in the division, the Vikings grabbed a victory over Laney earlier this week and took their third match from the Pirates this season.
Kirby Smith led the attack with 14 kills for Hoggard. Madie Schider chipped in with 19 digs and Logan Smith recorded 16 assists.
Payton Schoenleber had 13 assists for Topsail, while Marlee Marrotta continued her strong defensive play with 14 digs. Victoria Elder had a team-high four kills.
Hoggard and Topsail now await their first-round opponents in the state playoffs. Both teams will receive a home game to start the tournament. The Pirates compete in the 3A bracket, while Hoggard enters play in 4A competition.

Soccer playoffs (first round)
The Cape Fear Academy and Coastal Christian boys soccer teams learned their fate for the upcoming NCISAA 2A playoffs on Wednesday as each team will host a first-round later this week.
Following a 15-7-1 mark, the Centurions were given a five-seed in the 12-twelve team tournament and face No. 12 Rocky Mount Academy.
“This is an opportunity to extend this journey that no one wanted to see come to an end,” said Coastal Christian Coach Michael Scheffel. “This season has been all about our journey, which has been filled with great highs and lows, twists and unexpected turns, but has now prepared us for this moment to continue pursuing our dreams and goals into postseason play.”
In its five years of competing in the NCISAA, the Centurions have not only made playoffs for five years in a row, but have received a higher seed for five consecutive seasons.
The top four programs in the bracket received first round byes. Cape Fear Academy grabbed a six-seed at 13-6-2 overall and entertain No. 11 Grace Christian School.
Both first-round matches are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24.
