Troopers with the N.C. State Highway Patrol are investigating a single-vehicle wreck that killed a 27-year-old man off Kerr Avenue in New Hanover County.
Jerome Cromartie was in a vehicle traveling southwest on Kerr Avenue just north of Gordon Road, when he crossed the center lane to the left and struck a mail box at about 6:10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, according to N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper J.A. Miller.
The vehicle continued into a telephone pole, struck a well house, crashed into a fence and overturned onto a parked car in a driveway, according to Miller’s report. The vehicle came to rest against the house and on top of the parked vehicle.
Cromartie was thrown from the vehicle and died. But a female passenger remained in the car when the vehicle came to rest. EMS crews removed the 30-year-old woman from the car and took her to the hospital, where she was reportedly in stable condition.
Alcohol and speed are suspected to be a factor in the wreck. People were inside the home when the car hit, but no one was injured. The investigation is ongoing.
