Local golfers open play at regional competitions across state

Seventeen local golfers teed off on two different courses in the state on Monday to compete in the opening round of the regional tournament. Players are looking to clinch a bid at next week’s state finals with participants representing six of seven Mideastern Conference programs.

4A Central Regional golf tournament at Pinehurst No. 1

After dropping a two-hole playoff at last week’s Mideastern Conference Tournament to fall short of the individual title, Katy Flax hit a 78 on Monday at the 4A Central Regional to sit one stroke ahead of league winner Caroline Cahill in fourth place overall.

Playing off the green tee markers at 5,454 yards, the senior from Ashley is six shots off the pace heading into the final round on Tuesday. Megan Munroe (Hoke) posted a 71 in the opening round to sit atop the leaderboard.

3A East Regional Tournament at Wedgewood Public Golf Course

Hitting off the gray tees at the 3A East Regional Tournament at Wedgewood Public Golf Course in Wilson, Siranon Shoomee has a three-shot lead after posting a one-under-par, 71, on Monday. 

Janie Gooch hit 83, which is good for fifth-place on the leader board as South Brunswick is fifth in the team standings, with West Brunswick at 14th opening round action.
