New Hanover County Emergency Management has announced that the New Hanover County operated shelter at Trask Middle School was closed as of 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5.
The American Red Cross will open a shelter at 4 p.m. Monday, at the Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville Ave. in Wilmington.

Carolina Beach has issued a voluntary evacuation for residents in the town’s north end. Officials are encouraging all those in low-lying areas to seek higher ground, or to stay indoors if they are not evacuating. Residents are being directed to New Hanover County’s emergency shelter at Trask Middle School. Trash pick up on the north end will be delayed until later in the week.

New Hanover County Emergency Management officials will open an emergency shelter at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, October 4 to assist those experiencing flooding due to extreme rainfall.
Officials said Trask Middle School, 2900 N. College Road in Wilmington, will be available for those whose homes cannot withstand the wind or rain.
Public shelters should be considered “shelters of last resort” with very basic provisions for a safe and dry environment and limited meal capabilities.
Officials encourage those that live in areas prone to flooding, including residents of mobile homes or other structures that may not withstand strong wind or high water, to leave their homes prior to the impact of extreme rainfall.
Trask Middle School is considered a a pet co-location shelter, is available to house cats and dogs as well as their owners. Animals will be maintained in a separate wing of the facility, and owners will be allowed visitation at designated times.
Residents who are leaving town or staying in a location that does not welcome pets have the option of taking their pet to be boarded at the New Hanover County Animal Services Unit at 180 Division Drive. Owners are responsible for providing a crate for their pet.
Residents opting for a public shelter are encouraged to bring the following items for you and each of your family members. Pet owners should also bring medications and/or food for special dietary needs.
- Sleeping bag, bedroll, or sheets and blankets and pillows.
- Prescription medications in their original bottle.
- Items that infants and elderly household members may require.
- Extra clothing, hygiene supplies, and other comfort items.
- Personal identification, checkbook, cash, and credit cards.
- Snacks or comfort foods or any special dietary foods (prepackaged foods only)
- Time occupiers; books, magazines, games or cards.
Items that are strictly prohibited include weapons, alcohol and illegal drugs.
Other items those seeking shelter should consider bringing include: Social Security card; proof of residence; insurance policies and contact telephone numbers for your insurance company; birth and marriage certificates; stocks, bonds, and other negotiable certificates; wills, deeds and copies of recent tax returns.
