A group of local lifeguards made waves at a national competition last week.
Members of the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Team came in third place in the small beach category in the 2015 Nautica United States Lifesaving Association’s (USLA) National Lifeguard Championships.
The 10 men and four women who represented Wrightsville Beach had many top 10 finishes, including a first place finish for Lt. Hunter Hay in the surfski event for the 30-34 year-old age group.
Over 1200 lifeguards from 64 chapters from around the country competed in the events, held in Daytona Beach, Florida. The team from Wrightsville Beach earned their spot in the national championships by winning the top spot in a regional championship held in Carolina Beach last month.
