A Leland woman and her boyfriend were arrested in connection with the alleged abuse of her infant son on Thursday.
Albert David Morgan, 35, of Green Hill Road NE in Leland, has been charged with felony intentional child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Emily Flax.
Angel Marie Ray, 33, of Irvine Trail, Leland, is charged with felony accessory after the fact of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury after “consistently giving false information to authorities” in relation to her son’s injuries and her boyfriend, according to an arrest warrant.
“The incident occurred on Thursday when Ray, the mother of the infant victim, left the baby in the care of Morgan while she went to a doctor’s appointment,” Flax said. “Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where they determined that the baby’s injuries were consistent with abuse.”
According to an arrest warrant, the 1-year-old boy had multiple abrasions and contusions on his face, neck and body, as well as head trauma that resulted in bleeding in his brain. The infant is being treated in the pediatric intensive care unit at North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Ray was taken to the Brunswick County jail, where she was placed under a $200,000 secured bond. During a first appearance in Brunswick County District Court on Friday, District Judge Bill Fairley raised Ray’s bond to $750,000 secured.
Morgan, who was arrested Jan. 15, was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $1 million bond. Fairley ordered that Morgan’s bond remain at $1 million secured.
Correction: Based on incorrect information provided by the sheriff’s office, a previous version of this story incorrectly stated where Ray was when the alleged abuse occurred.
