6:30 p.m. update: CFPUA crews have contained the hydrant and traffic has cleared in the area. The original report follows:

A fire hydrant struck by a vehicle at South Front and Queen streets is spilling water and affecting traffic near the foot of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

The Wilmington Police Department is advising motorists to avoid the area, which is near the westbound access to the bridge. Crews with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority are working to fix the hydrant and shut off the water, the department said.

Portions of South Front Street near the on-ramp to the bridge may be closed. Motorists are advised to be cautious and use alternate routes where possible.
