More than 100 charges issued in Oleander Drive DWI checkpoint

Eleven impaired driving charges were issued during a multi-agency DWI checkpoint Saturday on Oleander Drive.

According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer, the DWI checkpoint occurred in the 6300 block of Oleander Drive near Boathouse Road on Sept 27.

“As an active participant in the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office S.A.F.E. unit hosted the…checking station,” Brewer said.

The sheriff’s office conducted the checkpoint with the assistance of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington Police Department, Carolina Beach Police Department, UNC-Wilmington Police Department, N.C. Ports Authority Police Department and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

More than 100 charges were issued and 12 arrests were made at the checkpoint, Brewer said.

The following charges were issued:

  • Driving while impaired–11
  • Under age possession of alcohol violation–6
  • Open container of alcohol violation–4
  • Drug violations–5
  • Resisting arrest violations–2
  • Driving while license revoked–5
  • No operator’s license/other license violations–23
  • Expired registration–18
  • Safety inspection violations–6
  • Insurance violations–3
  • Seatbelt violations–13
  • Overcrowded vehicle violations–3
  • Texting while driving–1
  • Speeding–1
  • Fugitive warrant served–1
