The Headless Horseman rides again tonight, as the sophomore season of the Wilmington-filmed TV series “Sleepy Hollow” premieres on Fox at 9 p.m.

The still-in-production series has been filming in Wilmington since May, picking up where it left off late last year in what proved to be a successful first-season effort.

News that the show—a modern-day re-telling of the Washington Irving classic “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”—was picked up for a second season broke before filming for its first season wrapped. Anticipation has been high for the show’s second season, which has been paired with the likewise-hyped origins series “Gotham.”

Like last year, filming for “Sleepy Hollow” has been visible in Wilmington, with scenes shot on Third Street and Orange Street downtown, in addition to old haunts such as Bellevue Cemetery. Carolina Apartments at Market and Fifth is featured, as is the former Murchison National Bank building and the New Hanover County Historic Courthouse, which serves as the show’s police department.

The Orange Street shoot was particularly visible, with a war scene involving fire and explosions turning plenty of heads in early August. The shoot gave a hint of what’s to come in season two, which promotional videos and teasers have described as a war between forces of good and evil.

The season also brings into the fold some famous historical names, such as Benjamin Franklin, played by Timothy Busfield, as star Tom Mison notes in a promo.

Describing his character, Ichabod Crane, Mison says in the video: “You have a man who’s from the 18th century who was mates with George Washington, and we get to learn more about his relationships with founding fathers in this season.”

Executive Producer Robert Orci adds: “One of the things we love doing on ‘Sleepy Hollow’ is to check out history and see if there’s holes and gaps that we can fill in some fiction that could’ve happened if there really was a war with evil at the time. So you’ll see a lot of that continuing with season two.”

In addition to Mison, the series starts Nicole Beharie as Lt. Abbie Mills, Katia Winter as Katrina Crane and Orlando Jones as Capt. Frank Irving.

More on “Sleepy Hollow” can be found on the show’s official Fox website.
