Two acoustic guitar virtuosos will play on one stage here in the Port City this summer.
Just announced yesterday over the 98.3 The Penguin airwaves, acclaimed Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela are headed to Wilmington on Tuesday, Aug. 5, for a concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater.
The local stop, made possible by Huka Entertainment and 98.3 The Penguin, is part of the band’s full U.S. tour in support of its latest album, “9 Dead Alive,” a stripped-down, roots-driven release.
This week also marked the vinyl release of Rodrigo y Gabriela’s self-titled debut and second album, “11:11.”
The pair will appear on the Conan O’Brien show on May 8 before hitting the road for a host of shows across the country.
Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero met as teenagers in Mexico City. Working on different projects, the two eventually came together as an outfit in–of all places–Dublin, Ireland, where they began to develop a European following.
Their self-titled album entered the Irish Albums Chart at the number-one spot, beating Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Cash. It was released internationally in March 2006.
Known for having heavy metal influences, the musicians have gained notoriety with covers of hard-hitting tunes, such as Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and Metallica’s “Orion.”
Rodrigo y Gabriela now has more than a million album sales to its credit and has helped arrange the score of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and contributed to the soundtrack for “Shrek” prequel, “Puss in Boots.”
Tickets to the show go on sale at 10 a.m. this Friday. They are $35 in advance and $40 the day of the show and can be purchased online at portcitydaily.com, as well as Gravity Records and Momentum Surf & Skate.
