Cat burned, but alive, after early morning house fire

An early morning house fire saw a cat sustain non-life-threatening burns but all other occupants and firefighters uninjured.

Crews with the Wilmington Fire Department responded to the fire at 222 Rose Ave. Wednesday at 1:15 a.m. The fire was brought under control by 1:47 a.m., according to the department.

All occupants had evacuated before firefighters arrived, but a search of the house was conducted to ensure everyone was out, according to the department. No injuries were reported, but a cat was burned and taken by a neighbor to an emergency vet. Occupants were said to be staying with friends.

The fire is under investigation. Cause and damage estimates are to be released once the investigation is complete.

UPDATE: The investigation concluded the fire was accidental, caused by a problem with an electrical cord, according to the department. Structural damage was estimated at $75,000, with $20,000 worth of damage to contents.
