The salty dog is a staple of coastal living. But on Pleasure Island, there’s long been confusion over the rules for bringing Fido to the beach.
That may change; the Carolina Beach Town Council on Tuesday will consider a proposal to align with neighbor Kure Beach’s ordinance specifying when it’s OK–or not–to bring animals for walks along the surf.
The 6:30 p.m. meeting (at 1121 N. Lake Park Blvd.) will include a public hearing.
“Staff has heard from members of the community and tourists about the frustration with the conflicting rules between Kure Beach and Carolina Beach,” a memo to the Carolina Beach council explained.
Carolina and Kure are on the same shoreline.
Currently, Kure Beach prohibits dogs on the beach from April 1-Sept. 30.
Carolina Beach’s prohibition runs March 1-Oct. 31.
The latter town’s technical review committee in November supported changes for consistency across Pleasure Island. As proposed, Carolina Beach would shift to Kure Beach’s April 1-Sept. 30 no-animals-on-the-beach schedule.
Violations could fetch $25 fines.
Pets in public must remain leashed, according to town rules, and it’s on the owner to clean up waste (with $50 violation fines).
