A breaking and entering suspect was shot Wednesday night in Wilmington.

According to police spokeswoman Linda Rawley, three men reportedly broke into an apartment on Lamp Post Circle in Wilmington at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday.

Police pursued the suspects and shot one suspect in the leg.

“The suspects fled the apartment on foot into a wooded area,” Rawley said. “Officers combed the area near Franklin Avenue searching for the suspects. [An] officer noticed three black males fitting the suspects’ descriptions sitting in a gold Cadillac parked off Lullwater Drive.

“When officers approached the vehicle they gave the suspects several commands and ordered them to show their hands. The suspects refused to comply with the officers’ commands. The driver of the suspect vehicle charged at the officers with the car. Two of the officers fired several shots at the vehicle, injuring one of the suspects in the leg.”

The suspect was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. All three suspects have been taken into custody. Police have not released the name of the suspects.

No officers were injured.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
