Tropical Storm Erin forms in Atlantic

The fifth named tropical storm of the hurricane season has formed in the Atlantic Ocean.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reports Tropical Storm Erin has formed west-southwest of the southern Cape Verde Islands.

Per the 8 a.m. update from the National Weather Service (NWS), Tropical Storm Erin had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. The storm is moving west-northwest at 16 mph. Tropical storm-force winds extend 35 miles from the storm’s center.

The only current NWS warnings affecting land are for the southern Cape Verde Islands.
