A repair to the sagging spot of Riverfront Park across from the Alton Lennon Federal Building in downtown Wilmington is expected to wrap up next week.
A bulletin from the City of Wilmington said the U.S. Coast Guard, which owns the site, is continuing exploratory work there–high mounds of dirt behind orange, plastic fencing kept foot traffic away this week–and plans to fill the sinkhole adjacent to the bulkhead in the week of Aug. 19.

That block of Water Street, between Market and Princess streets, will remain open, the city said.
But as it has for the past two weeks, the Coast Guard’s ongoing work there will again displace Friday’s Downtown Sundown concert. Normally held in Riverfront Park each week, the Aug. 16 concert will take place a block north in the parking lot at Water and Princess streets.
Scheduled to perform is The Waiting, a tribute to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The music will start at 6 p.m.

The city says the Saturday Riverfront Farmers’ Market (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) will remain on Water Street, though the Sunday Historic Downtown Wilmington Marketplace (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) will move to Bailey’s Theater Park at 12 N. Front St. for Aug. 18.
The Coast Guard has been exploring and testing the park property since late July to determine the extent of repairs needed to the bulkhead in a project set for next year.
