OCEAN ISLE BEACH—A second-floor balcony collapsed at a home on the west end of Ocean Isle Beach Tuesday night, injuring 21 people.
Brunswick County Emergency Services Director Anthony Marzano said the balcony at a home at 83 Ocean Isle West Blvd. collapsed at about 8:20 p.m., falling onto a concrete patio below.
Seven people were taken to Novant Brunswick Medical Center, 13 people were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and one person was air-lifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
None of the injuries were considered life threatening, but injuries were traumatic, including broken bones, lacerations, and head, neck and spinal injuries from the impact, Marzano said.
Ocean Isle Beach Town Administrator Daisy Ivey said the people were renting the home, which was built in 2003.
“We just want to express our concern for all the individuals who were injured in the deck collapse. At this point, our building inspector is visiting the site,” Ivey said.
