The City of Wilmington is advertising the names of property owners who owe nearly $18,000 in unpaid fees related to public nuisances and demolitions.
Wilmington City Council on Tuesday authorized the city’s tax collector to advertise liens for the costs incurred and file judgments for the amounts after six months.
State law allows the city to declare certain conditions on properties as public nuisances and to clean them up if the property owners fail to.
The city can also tear down hazardously substandard structures and expect the properties’ owners to pay the cost.
“Public nuisance liens are collected in the same manner as unpaid taxes,” information from the city explains. “Demolition liens are collected in the same manner as liens for special assessments.”
