Bridgework will close lanes on several area roadways over the next few weeks.
Maintenance to the College Road bridge over Market Street in Wilmington will require the right northbound lane of Market to be closed this Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 17-19, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
More lane closures are scheduled for the N.C. 210-N.C. 50 bridge in Surf City, where work has already gotten underway. This latest round of closures will last Sunday through Monday, Feb. 17-18, from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
The work is weather permitting, and the entire bridge will be closed for 30-minute intervals throughout the night, in addition to the lane closures, which are needed for maintenance.
In Brunswick County, intermittent lane closures are scheduled over two weeks for the Oak Island bridge that carries N.C. 133 over the Intracoastal Waterway, connecting Long Beach Road with Country Club Drive.
Those closures will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays starting Wednesday, Feb. 20, and lasting through Thursday, Feb. 28. The work is weather permitting, and no closures are scheduled for the weekend.
Crews with the N.C. Department of Transportation will be performing routine inspections, according to a release. Motorists are advised to reduce their speed in the area.
More work is slated for the bridge this year, as DOT has awarded a $3.7-million contract to preserve the structure, which is four decades old. Work will include resurfacing the bridge deck, replacing expansion joints and repairing concrete in the substructure.
HRI Bridge Co. of State College, Penn., was awarded the contract, and work can begin anytime between March 1 and August 1, with completion required about 14 months after the project starts.
The project is part the DOT’s state-funded bridge plan for 2011-13, which calls for $450 million worth of preservation, repairs or replacement of bridges statewide.
