Longtime Brunswick County sheriff’s deputy dies at age 41

Detective Kyle Jones

A 19-year veteran of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office died Monday.

Detective Kyle Jones, 41, passed away at his home Monday, Jan. 14, according to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mose Highsmith.

Highsmith said no foul play is suspected. Jones’ cause of death was not immediately available.

“Detective Jones was a 19-year veteran of law enforcement,” Highsmith said. “He served the citizens of Columbus County from 1994 until 2000, and served the citizens of Brunswick [County] from 2000 until his death.

“Sheriff Ingram asks that you keep the family of Detective Jones in your prayers,” Highsmith said.

Steve Lanier, who worked with Jones at the sheriff’s office for many years, remembered Jones as one of the people who helped Lanier when he was shot on duty.

“It was people like Kyle Jones that pulled me through 12 years ago. It was people like Kyle Jones that put their heart into saving a brother like Tony Caison. It is the legacy of Kyle Jones where he taught us all how to live—live for one another and maybe one day, God willing, we will meet him in heaven.

“Love you brother Kyle. Your were way better to me than I deserve and you made me a better person. God Bless you and your family,” Lanier said.

Arrangements are being handled by Brunswick Funeral Service in Shallotte. No memorial services have been announced.
