Wilmington police investigate ‘suspicious’ death of 48-year-old man

Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating the “suspicious” death of a 48-year-old man Wednesday morning.

According to Wilmington Police Department Spokeswoman Lucy Crockett, police were called to the 4900 block of New Centre Drive on Wednesday morning to assist EMS with a victim with a serious head injury.

Crockett said Judson Lee Poland Jr., 48, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he died.

“The victim, who had no fixed address, may have been assaulted,” Crockett said. “The preliminary results of the autopsy performed [Thursday] confirmed the cause of death to be subdural hematoma.”

Subdural hematoma is a collection of blood on the surface of the brain, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

“When a death is suspicious…it’s investigated as if it’s a homicide until we know absolutely,” Crockett said.

The investigation is ongoing.
