Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department are investigating an early morning shooting death in Wilmington.
According to Lucy Crockett, spokeswoman for the police department, officers responded to the shooting at a home in the 5200 block of Hunters Trail at 12:43 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28.
When officers arrived, Ali Akbar Dastmalchi, 65, told officers he heard someone breaking the glass on his front door, so he retrieved his handgun to “investigate,” Crockett said.
“When he got to the bottom of the steps he could see that the glass in the top door was broken. He said when he opened the front door he looked to his left and saw someone lunging at him with a spiked object in his hand.
“He fired one round at close range, striking the person in the chest. When he turned on the porch light, he realized the person he shot was his brother,” Crockett said.
Dastmalchi called 911, and EMS took the brother, Vahid Dastmalchi, 63, to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he died.
The investigation is ongoing. Check back for more details on this developing story.
