16th Street water valve work postponed to January

Postponed once already, a project to replace water valves along 16th Street between Grace and Dawson streets is being put on hold until the start of 2013.

“Due to complications discovered underground at various worksites, the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s water valve replacement project…has been postponed until January, after the holidays have passed,” the authority said in a notice issued Thursday.

About 65 customers whose service has been affected by the project will be notified prior to the project resuming, the release also noted. Service is expected to remain normal through the rest of the holiday season, and a boil-water advisory was set to be lifted later today.

Authority spokesman Mike McGill said the project, which started two weeks ago, is more than halfway done. Two intersections remain for the work to be completed, meaning those closer to Dawson, as the project had been progressing southward from its starting point at Grace.

The overnight work, scheduled each day from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., started Dec. 10 and was scheduled for completion over three or four days. Inclement weather prompted the first delay, which saw work postponed to this week.

Details of the project and a map of the area can be viewed here.
