Valve work will impact traffic on 16th Street starting Wednesday

Work on water valves along a stretch of 16th Street in Wilmington will cause some traffic impacts starting Wednesday.

“The water valve replacement project will take place at night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. in an effort to lessen traffic impacts in this area. Due to the valve locations, it will be necessary to temporarily close certain intersections during this project,” stated a press release from the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA).

The work will take place on 16th Street between Grace and Dawson streets, the notice said.

“Motorists can expect detours around the intersections of 16th Street at Orange, Ann and Castle streets and lane reductions on 16th at Grace and Dawson streets,” CFPUA said, adding traffic control devices and message boards will explain the new travel routes.

CFPUA, expecting the work to last three or four days, provided the following schedule and work locations:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 7 – 16th Street at Grace Street (right southbound lane will be closed)
  • Thursday, Nov. 8 – 200 block of 16th Street (between Orange and Ann streets) will be closed. Intersection at 16th and Ann streets will be closed. 16th Street traffic will be rerouted on Orange to 15th Street to Nun Street.
  • Friday, Nov. 9 – Intersection at 16th and Castle streets will be closed. Traffic will be detoured at Church Street to 15th Street to Queen Street.
  • Dates to be determined – Two left southbound lanes on 16th Street between Wooster and Dawson streets will be closed as will the far left eastbound lane on Dawson Street at the 16th Street intersection.
