A 25-year-old Wilmington man was sentenced Wednesday in federal court on drug and firearm violations.
Dymon Laquinn Black, 25, was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possessing and using a firearm during a drug trafficking offense, according to U.S. District Attorney Thomas Walker.
Black pleaded guilty to the charges in July, Walker said.
Walker said Black shot himself in the hand trying to unload his gun after an attempted robbery. He was later arrested by the Wilmington Police Department when officers met with Black in the hospital in August 2011.
Before shooting himself, Black attempted to rob a man of his money and belongings during a drug deal, Walker said. Black used the gun during the robbery and, while trying to unload the firearm at home, he shot himself in the hand.
According to Walker, Black went to the hospital claiming he was a victim of robbery and Wilmington police were called to the hospital. When officers received consent from Black to search his home they found 19 bags of marijuana and blood from his hand.
Police said Black confessed to the attempted robbery and shooting himself.
