Brunswick reports sewage spill

BRUNSWICK COUNTY — Around 4,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled when a contractor impacted a force main in St. James Friday night.

A notice the Brunswick County Public Information Office issued Monday explained a cable contractor caused the spill while boring into the ground. Brunswick County Public Utilities Director Jerry Pierce said the contractor created earthen dams around the spill and successfully contained it.

The sewage did not touch any surface waters, he added.

The spill was recorded at 2810 St. James Drive in St. James.

State law requires utility agencies to notify the public about sewage spills.

Persons with questions about the notice may call Collections System Superintendent Steve Hlastala at 253-2681.
