RALEIGH — The North Carolina State Board of Elections is investigating reports of individuals conducting voter registration drives allegedly misleading voters or falsely claiming to be state or county election officials.
Investigators have received complaints from Brunswick, Buncombe, Chowan, Haywood, Nash, Scotland, and Wake counties.

Alleged misconduct includes telling already-registered voters they must re-register, falsely claiming to be government election workers while going door-to-door, and submitting incomplete or inaccurate voter registration forms — a Class I felony.
“The State Board will investigate all credible allegations of voter registration fraud by individuals or organizations,” Executive Director Sam Hayes said in a release. “When workers involved in voter drives falsify or alter information on registration forms, it can cause problems for innocent voters at the polls. This is unacceptable and hurts voter confidence.”
State Board officials said county and state election workers do not go door-to-door. If someone claims to be an elections official, voters should ask for identification, record the person’s name and contact the State Board of Elections.
Voters are encouraged to verify their registration status through the State Board’s Voter Search tool and to personally return forms submitted during voter drives if they have concerns.
Voters should also ask voter registration workers to verify their identities and affiliated organizations before providing any personal information. If an individual refuses to do so, voters are advised not to share information and to contact the State Board of Elections’ Investigations Division.
Unregistered voters or those who need to update their registration status can visit the State Board of Elections How to Register and Updating Registration pages.
