Wilmington man arrested, charged with kidnapping in fatal Leland shooting

LELAND — A Wilmington man has been arrested in connection with a triple shooting on Dixie Drive that left one person dead and two others injured on Jan. 2.

Dustin Luke Powers, 33, was apprehended on Jan. 14 with assistance from the Wilmington Police Department. He is currently charged with first-degree kidnapping and breaking and entering with intent to terrorize.

According to a press release from the Town of Leland, officers initially responded to the 100 block of Dixie Drive around 3:30 a.m. following reports of a critical incident. Upon arrival, police officers found 35-year-old Dylan Charles Hennessey deceased at the scene. Two other victims were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Powers is being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center without bond. His first appearance is scheduled for Jan. 15 in the Brunswick County Courthouse, courtroom 001. 

The Leland Police Department continues to investigate the case alongside the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office.
